Sunday at 1PM there will be the big competition: Paper Model Balloon Competition Which home-made hot-air balloon goes furthest?
Delivery: Your entries can be delivered on May 23rd from 8AM onwards directly at the Pavillion on the launch field. The competition entries will be displayed in the event marquee during the whole period of the Held Trophy. We will test the model balloons on Sunday 8 th July 2007 at mid-day and decide the winner. The children's prize giving ceremony will take place immediately before the International Held Trophy main prize-giving ceremony and will be held at 14:30 .
Ballooning at schoolArt: Almost every envelope looks different, mostly they are happy and cheerful, coloured and attractive. What would an Appenzell hot-air balloon look like? History: Since human memory began, people have dreamt of flying, and therefore there are many possible links to integrate into the subject into the lessons, beginning with the Greek myths (Hermes), through the Renaissance (Da Vinci ), the French revolution (the brothers Montgolfier) up to Switzerland on the threshold of the 21st century (the dynasty of Piccard ). Physics: A hot-air balloon does not fly, it "goes" … and demonstrates physical laws in an easy-to-understand way. Meteorology and geography : Height and winds determine the routes taken for short and long adventures. Balloon flights are amusing examples that indicate how the global winds can move and have been used (e.g., Bertrand Piccards around-the-world flight ), however, also the local weather conditions also have an influence. With favourable weather conditions one can even cross the Alps … Calculation : Of course balloons can be also be incorporated in the teaching of Mathematics , where volumes, weights, and the similar must be calculated. Language: Hot-air balloon could be an essay topic or a reading subject (see, e.g., in Jules Vern's classic "Around the World in 80 days" or his travel novel "Five weeks in a balloon"). Karl-Josef Hein will be happy to provide the introduction to the subject. |
